Reclaiming Time The Triba Way

Triba is an innovative concept in wellness for mothers and children, where mothers can access fitness, spa and relaxation and social facilities, while their children are looked after through a range of stimulating activities.

The culture of wellness, which predominates current western cultural thinking, means we’re all looking at extending our lives, while simultaneously striving to enjoy a better-quality lifestyle. “50 is the new 30” we’re told, and images of glamorous, young-at-heart individuals with fit bodies and healthy minds abound. We have all become more aware of working to keep fit and healthy, looking good and looking forward to enjoying our lives for longer than our predecessors might have.

The brainchild, Triba, by founder Dale Knowles-Gaylard, who found that her needs as a new mum were not being met, is the first of its kind: a one-stop member-based centre where wellness is distributed both physically and intellectually to women in motherhood, whilst their children’s well-being is ensured. The cornerstones of the Triba service offering are support, networking, space and time for mothers.

Translated into services and facilities, these include a variety of offerings to women – from napping in an elegantly appointed sleep room to doing internet research in the library, chatting over a cup of coffee or networking – all while their children are cared for or enjoy some form of extra-mural activity.
When considering time from a macro-perspective and comparing the timing of our lives to those of our mothers and grandmothers, it goes without saying that the differences in our lifestyles are dramatic. In the past women might typically have completed high school, married young and settled down to become mothers and housewives. These girls were considered mature matrons on reaching their 30’s or 40’s.

Currently school-leavers often spend anything from one to five years attaining tertiary qualifications before settling down to work. Exploring job opportunities while exploring the globe is often an option. Relationships, marriage and starting a family are often postponed into their middle or even late thirties - or “advanced maternal age”, as my gynaecologist politely referred to my age when I became a mother for the first time at 37!

So, while our biological clocks do tick at a predetermined pace, our expectations of life are different. We have effectively “pushed out” our timelines or life-cycles beyond the restrictions characterized by age and even biological boundaries like menopause. Women nowadays consider themselves beautiful and desirable beyond menopause and are, in effect, claiming this “second season” with grace, aplomb and plenty of passion and interest in their lives – be it their love lives or a second career.

On a micro-scale as mothers, wives and partners, we do spend plenty of time meeting other people’s needs. While we might do this with enthusiasm, love and pleasure, we get so involved in the process that we often lose sight of who we are and what we need to recharge and regenerate ourselves. We’re so busy meeting other people’s needs that we don’t find the time to meet our own – be that through naps, exercise, reading or enjoying a good chat with a like-minded individual. Suddenly we find ourselves feeling tired, flat and a little lost, all because we’ve lost sight of ourselves in the hurly-burly of our lives! It is only by meeting our own needs for certain things like rest and time out, exercise, intellectual stimulation and social interaction that we have the energy to enjoy our families at home after a hectic week at work.

As part of the wellness industry which is sweeping the world and changing the way we live and work, the services and facilities on offer at Triba are designed to assist mothers to rediscover, re-ignite or extend their passion for life on various levels. Aside from enjoying a variety of exercise, stretch and dance classes, Triba members will be able to “claim time” for themselves physically by enjoying day-spa and pampering beauty treatments at the TribaSpa. This recharging or regeneration is also available to tired Mums needing to catch up on a little rest. We have two elegantly-appointed sleep rooms. The TribaLibrary and the TribaSensory gardens which include a fragrance garden and two sound gardens, are just some options available for a little “R & R”!

On an intellectual level, Triba will be offering a broad selection of presentations or workshops at the TribaWorkshop on an ongoing basis, along with information and research resources in the TribaLibrary and the TribaBusiness Centre. Socially, there will be plenty of opportunity for networking anywhere at Triba, but perhaps especially at the TribaCafé and TriBar. If all else fails, then a little retail therapy awaits in the TribaBoutique!

However, most importantly on an emotional level is the peace of mind Triba offers Mums. While they’re enjoying “rediscovering” and revitalizing themselves, they know that their children are enjoying an outing as well. Gone are the guilt trips, because Triba will be offering age-appropriate childcare facilities alongside extra-murals (ranging from dance to swimming, yoga and Taekwondo).
The flagship centre is located at 39/41 St Albans Road, Craighall Park. Corporate memberships are also available.
