Society is about conformity and complacency. Big business is almost entirely about the same. Entrepreneurship, in both contexts, is about the opposite. Entrepreneurship means breaking from the norm. It involves a shift out of the overwhelming pull of conformity towards life and prosperity. It involves another kind of awareness, an access to different energy to which the norm has no normal access.
Entrepreneurs see things differently; they live by a different purpose and drive. They follow the forces within and, as a result, they are attuned to them. To get in touch with this different energy and to learn to work with it, entrepreneurs need experience. They need to gain experience outside the norm. This is why they often so-called “fail” at first. The failure is actually in society, and in the political and social structures within it, and in designing schools and universities the way they do. The failure is in teaching the wrong things to children. Entrepreneurs, like everyone else, have to face what they are taught, but they somehow don’t fall victim to it. Somehow they remain rebellious, following a deeper wisdom. Somehow they stay on track and keep a grip on their true selves, their creativity and ingenuity, their spark. An important part of the entrepreneur’s experience, the experience of operating outside the norm, is having nothing to lose. Most people act in accordance with what is important to them, what they hold dear, what they value. They conduct themselves in order to retain what they have, to protect. They seek security, which is really just seeking death. Death is the only security. Entrepreneurs seek life and act according to spirit. They follow their entrepreneurial spirit. They will take risks for it because they know it is bigger, more intelligent, than conformity. To be able to do this, though, they encounter having nothing to lose. To truly follow spirit, you need to have nothing to lose. To be a practitioner of spiritual business, you need to know how to operate from a position of having nothing to lose. When you have something to lose, you are afraid, protective, cowardly and clingy. Not nice! When you have nothing to lose, your spirit it present. You are in yourself, ready to act. That’s better! You have a distinct advantage over people who are clinging. You are more alive, more responsive, sharper and wiser. You are less violent, which is perhaps the only advantage a clinging person has – a propensity for violence. But who wants that? It’s preferable to be alive and get hurt, than to be dead and hurtful. Besides, pain for the entrepreneur is not something to be avoided. It is part of the fullness of life, often the seed of great learning. Growing can be painful! An entrepreneur feels everything more, including pain, as this is part of thriving. With nothing to lose, you are clearer, calmer. You don’t even have to think because you are in tune and intelligence is working through you. You are co-operating with the masterpiece. You watch it unfold before you, through you. It is wondrous! Having been to the edge and over the edge of your fear, having had the experience of nothing to lose, awakens you to a new realm of possibility, and of certainty. It gives you a strength to endure challenges as you implement change, as you facilitate growth, as you bring something new into being and change the world and lead it forward. So, in an entrepreneur’s life, there will be many experiences of extremes. Somewhere along the way, having nothing to lose will play a big part. It is formative. Having nothing to lose gives you freedom to choose. Robin Wheeler is the author of the INSIGHTS series of books. This is an excerpt from the first book, INSIGHTS. |
