Courage Doesn’t Always Roar

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow.” Mary Anne Radmacher. This quote by writer and artist Mary Anne Radmacher really resonated with me. As an entrepreneur with my own business, working from home, sometimes I don’t always feel like a lion with a strong roar.

In reality, most of the time I feel rather overwhelmed with too many things to do and too little time. I often wake up in the mornings feeling like I am already running late. Although I work from home and do not have too many set commitments on my time, fitting everything in still remains a challenge, and many days end with me saying that I will try again tomorrow.

This quote also rings true as a mother. Parenting is not a science that can be perfectly formulated, but is rather a trial and error road with much joy and love mixed in with challenges and upheavals. All us moms love our children dearly,  but not all the aspects of our parenting run as smoothly as we would like and many a day draws to a close with me saying to myself that I will try again tomorrow.

I guess in this way being an entrepreneur is much like being a mom. Both require taking a risk and stepping into the unknown but both pay big rewards for success.

It takes courage to be a mom and an entrepreneur. Sometimes it is the courage to roar a strong loud roar of strength, conviction, commitment, passion and determination. But other times courage can manifest itself by not giving up and just committing to try again tomorrow. This is when you need to keep persevering, even when the outcome is not certain or the way seems hard.

Being an entrepreneur is not an easy road. It is the road less travelled precisely because it is a more difficult option than just doing your job and getting a set salary. When you work for yourself, there is little room to take time off, or rest for too long, as you need to constantly be the passion and drive behind your organisation. The uncertainty of owning your own business – not knowing how much money you will make each month, or even if you will still be in business next month - is also often difficult to deal with and you could loose the love of what you do in the pressure to make budget. Sometimes it will take a long time before you see and experience the real fruits of your labour. They say that it can take up to 3 full years to establish a new business and only if it survives that long will it be somewhat stable.  It is through the early uncertain times that you will need to just keep on persevering, knowing that owning your own business has rewards that regular employees never get to enjoy.

So, if you are a mom or an entrepreneur, or both, take comfort in knowing that courage doesn’t always roar, but sometimes it just says: "I will try again tomorrow".
