Dear Reader
August is upon us, and 2010 is showing no sign of slowing down! A colleague of mine actually greeted her team with a "Good morning everyone, Happy New Year!" directly after the World Cup. On the one hand it feels exactly like that, on the other I am wondering if I can legitimise my taking a couple of days off - can you relate?
With the FIFA World Cup barely off our radar, it's time to look ahead to what the rest of the year has in store for us. First up is the August celebration of women in our nation.
I always have to smile when I consider that we used to celebrate a single day, the 9th of August, as the day to commemorate; indeed it was a significant day in the life of our nation - where would we be without the courage of the women who marched on Pretoria over 50 years ago? What I smile about is how that day has morphed to include the whole month. Isn't that just like us: we take the little we hold in our hand and make much more from it than we ever could have envisioned.
Throughout August women's issues are in the spotlight. In conferences and publications, the range of issues affecting women are explored, analysed, challenged and profiled. With this in mind, I am keen to hear what you believe our focus should be for Women's Month - please visit our home page and add your vote to our poll.
I would also like to extend the opportunity to you to celebrate the women that you hold in high esteem. Please feel free to send us a paragraph or two with the person's name, how you interact with her and the reason that you would rate her as a women of influence in your life. We will collate these contributions into an article over the course of the month. That's all for now - here's wishing you a wonderful month!
With love
Rachel
