Wants vs Needs

Ask someone to make a list of what they want and another list for things they need and the two lists will probably look the same. This is because today we have become so obsessed with greed and want that we sometimes confuse what we want with what we need. Excess has become better than lack.

We are all different in many ways and what one person needs and wants will differ from the next. This might also be for the reason that our definitions of want and need differ. Lets say, for the purpose of this article, that need is something you cannot live without and want is extra luxuries. A luxury for one person can be an absolute need for the next, so there is no rule book with guidelines telling us that if we want a certain thing we are being greedy because it is not a need; therefore you are left with your own moral compass to decide what is want and what is need in your life, and thus persuading others what your needs and wants are might be a bit challenging.

Saying that you need something rather than wanting will generally evoke more sympathy towards you and you will probably get help in getting what you want. It is just so much easier to say that we need something instead of saying that we want things. Want just sounds so selfish.

Ask a girl to make a list of what she wants in the perfect guy and she will probably have a list ready in minutes. Will she get a guy with all those traits? Probably not, but as a wise woman once said, “God will give you what you need wrapped in a package you might not want”.

Just think about it: what you need might not always be what you want and visa versa, but what you get is almost always what you need. So have a look at your life and be thankful for what you have, because not everyone is as lucky as you.
