Our predominant thoughts eventually solidify into beliefs, which can change our lives for good or bad. Are we destined to be the victims of our thoughts, or do we have the power to change them, and live out of healthy, life-giving belief systems?
Say NO and make space for the YES of your choice. Meta Coaching can give you a clear, quick, and effective way to de-frame your old un –enhancing beliefs, and install new empowering beliefs that support your commitment to success. What is YOUR YES and NO? Two important commands that we learnt very early in life are expressed as YES and NO. These are the states of confirmation and disconfirmation. With the word “Yes”, we welcome and bring the world into ourselves – ideas, emotions, experiences, people etc. With the word “No”, we set boundaries and distinguish between “me” and “not me”. We push out and make space in our world. One of the many applications of Meta Coaching is to identify limiting and toxic beliefs, to build up and install empowering beliefs. The Meta-Coach knows the structure of a belief, so we can utilise this structure to coach new empowering beliefs. We can use this understanding to disregard ideas that we inherited or absorbed from our early cultural experiences in our families or schools, from books, media, peers, etc. A Meta Coach facilitates you through a journey, a quality control program on your beliefs to make sure you have healthy belief structures that will do you good over the long term. We assist you in checking the ecology of your beliefs in different contexts, by stepping back and asking questions about long-term effects, ecological effects on career, health, relationships, others, etc. This helps you make sure that your beliefs are balanced, healthy, and wholesome for where you want to go in life. Thoughts versus beliefs How powerful are the beliefs you hold? How do your beliefs affect the way you operate in the world? We know that “thoughts” send signals and messages to the body. As we “think”, so we begin to feel and respond. If that’s so with “thoughts”, it is a thousand times more true of “beliefs”. We know all too well about the self-fulfilling nature of “beliefs”. Beliefs are not innocent things. These entities of the mind do not just process information; they are “commands to the nervous system” (Richard Bandler). What are these entities of the mind that we call “beliefs?” How do they differ from mere “thoughts?” In Neuro-Semantics we study the way we turn a thought into a belief and confirm the validity and reality of the thought. As we do this, it transforms the thought from mere information, and commissions it to become a person’s reality strategy. When this happens, the belief commands the body and nervous system as it sets several frames in place: “This is real”, “This is important”, “This is the way it is”. When you have a mental-emotional frame like that, it’s no wonder the rest of the mind-emotion-body system simply responds to fulfil that frame. Belief in the myth of Father Christmas is an example. This reveals the special power we have when we say “Yes!” to a thought. Saying “Yes” to a thought enables us to validate that thought. In saying “Yes” we confirm the thought. In this way the mere thought becomes a full-fledged “belief.” It transforms, it metamorphoses. That which was just an idea, just images and representations, now becomes something more, something more powerful and dangerous : it becomes a “belief.” We now trust that this thought describes reality and gives us a map about what to do, think, feel, expect, etc. The more we say “Yes” to an idea, the more we believe it. The more we add passion and intensity and ferociousness to the thought so that you shout, “YES!”, the more emotional the belief. Eventually, our “Yes”, even our great big intense “YES” becomes a matter-of-fact: “Of course.” When it reaches that stage of development, we have, at a higher level of mind, created a reality strategy. Now it just seems “the way it is”. It loses the emotion and it just is. What beliefs would you like to welcome into your life? In Neuro-Semantics we introduce tools and techniques to turn a desired thought (an inspiring idea) into a belief. We build up or construct a “belief” from a thought through the process of validating it. We access a state of “Yes” and apply it to the idea that is just a thought. This meta-stating structure sets a sense of “Yes” as a frame to the thought. How empowering would it be to be able to consciously choose your beliefs? Would you like to construct the frame of mind from which you perform in your roles and responsibilities? Do you think this would help clear your way and assist with more effective action? Would this be more fulfilling for you? To believe or not to believe What thought would you like to turn into a belief? What ideas would you like to operate as a command to your nervous system and body? We say that a belief is a solidified thought that “feels real and true and accurate”. Yet these are not feelings. Where in your body do you feel that something is true or accurate? These are evaluations, judgments. So what does a belief feel like? When we believe, we feel sure - we have a feeling of assurance and trust. “I trust this as true”. “I feel sure that this is right”. The feeling of a belief is the feeling of strength and assurance. We speak of “conviction”. When you think about something that you really believe - you feel sure. You feel confident. You feel the strength of your conviction. The stronger the belief, the more you “know” and don’t have a shadow of a doubt. The weaker the belief, the more questions and doubts you have. Consider what this means. It means that a belief inevitably moves to a seemingly non-emotional state where we just “know for sure” that our thoughts accurately map the way things are. That’s why it’s hard to even notice our beliefs. The role of NO Sometimes we find that it will not work to just “Yes” the thought. Why not? When this happens, we probably have to eliminate various limiting and hindering beliefs that are in the way. If you say “Yes” to your desired thought and it doesn’t seem to become a belief, look for an opposing frame that discounts, devalues and excludes the validation. We deal with this by then accessing a state of “No!” or unconfirmed devaluation, and we apply that sense of “No” to the old belief. We do this to deconstruct (de-frame) the old validation. There is no space for the new until we eliminate the old. So how do we do this? We go meta! We have to step back and move to a meta-position to even become aware of them. We Meta-No the old mapping of reality, knowing that this will give us the space to then construct the new belief. KNOW your NO and say YES to feel great about believing • Know the difference between a thought and a belief • Know how a belief is a frame of mind that affects the way you drive your life • Know what belief about yourself or your environment you would like to eliminate from your frame of mind (double check that you really don’t want this anymore!) Know the Belief Change Pattern technique • Think of something that you feel strongly against (for example, animal cruelty) and connect with the total sensation of that feeling – NO! Anchor this Meta-No – so that you sensory know your NO! • Think of something that you feel positive about (for example, holding a puppy) and connect with the total sensation of that – YES! Anchor this Meta-Yes – so that you sensory know your YES! • Think of the belief that you want to eliminate – and with every fibre of your being connect to your NO and say NO to it. • Make a decision (to cut out). Think of the belief that you want to eliminate – and with every fibre of your being connect to your Meta-NO and say NO to the belief. • It’s not enough to just eliminate negative and disempowering beliefs. After we eliminate the limiting beliefs, we have to replace them with more empowering ones. • Now think of something that you want to say a Meta- YES to without any question or doubt. • Continue to say YES! – until you have fully welcomed it into your presence. • Those beliefs that support our resourcefulness need to be embedded inside of some really great feelings so that they have some real punch. • We want to enhance our beliefs with the qualities that allow them to be dominated with the best feelings: joy, playfulness, love, surprise, wonder, ecstasy, and the like. • As you imagine taking this into your future, are you fully aligned with this? Does this fit with who you are becoming? • Would this improve your life? • Would this be valuable to you?
