True to her role as nurturer of all life, Mother Nature offers us lessons in transformation. We only need to tune in and reflect a moment.
Have you ever noticed that in Nature there is no hesitation, no doubt, no fear, when it comes to making changes? When the time is right, Nature follows her well established plan and transforms herself. Nature does not linger in the previous season. She constantly evolves, moving forward into the next, renewing and reinventing herself. Many of us not only linger, but actually get stuck in the past, resisting change with every fibre of our being. Even when the time is right, when all the signs are there that it is time for change, time to leave our previous season behind us, we fight against it. We allow self-doubt and fear of the unknown to get the better of us, paralysing us into remaining in situations that are no longer good for us. Only when we are pushed, when we come face-to-face with the catalyst, reaching crisis point, do we galvanise ourselves into action, forcing the renewal and reinvention upon ourselves instead of easing ourselves gently into our next season. Change is inevitable. People change. Circumstances change. The unknown is only unknown because we have yet to explore it. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt). So why not learn from Nature and embrace change, welcome it as Earth welcomes the change of seasons? In Nature, transformation is a journey. Nothing happens overnight. The first signs of a new season are visible about 6 weeks before its actual arrival. The change process runs its course until everything comes together when the time is right, for only then will it be sustainable. We also need to follow a change process to ensure that the changes in our lives are meaningful, sustainable, and most importantly, made on our own terms, at our own pace, whenever possible. I have found, from my own experience, that if we follow a plan, a process of change, starting as soon as we see the first signs of change, we can make the transition far less traumatic. If we ignore the signs in the hope of avoiding the inevitable, we empower others to decide the outcome for us, forcing us into reacting in crisis mode. I share with you my tried and tested recipe for brewing change, as follows: • Identify the signs of change to come; How do you manage change in your life? I invite you to follow a change process when next you see the signs of changes to come. It will empower you to keep fear, self-doubt and stress at bay on your journey of renewal and reinvention. When the time is right, embrace the change. Make peace with your previous season and move gently into the new, making meaningful, sustainable changes. |
