Having just marked the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse, issues of power and gender have been brought to the forefront of our awareness in South Africa. This week we publish some poetry in line with these themes by Thobeka Linda.
sister sister
sister, why do you allow yourself to be treated with such disrespect? Sister, sister why do you allow them To tell you what to do? Don’t you know you have a mind of your Own?
The only place where you have to fit is You own skin and Not in your peers. You don’t have to stoop low to impress, All you do I depress yourself. You shouldn’t have to worry about what they say But you should worry about what He says.
Don’t you know that you are a rock- imbokodo You are a caregiver, a pillar of strength for many Uyinzalabantu- What a position.
You have power that’s beyond your Own comprehension You are wiser than you imagine. You are not just a pretty face. Don’t let the mirror fool you, Use your soul to reflect the Beauty within.
Powerful
Powerful is the tongue for it can build. Powerful is the eye for it can see the things that are not there. Powerful is the hand for it can strike and comfort. Powerful is the foot for it can endure in a race. Powerful is the mind for it can conceive the impossible. Powerful is the one who possesses such tools.
