I am sitting at PWC offices in Midrand, attending the Women in Finance Conference. This conference is part of the celebration of International Women's Day. The International Women's Day is celebrating its 100th year in existence. First up for the day is Venete Klein. Venete carries a legacy of 32 years of impact in the banking sector, Business Woman of the Year and is now the Vice President of Business Unity South Africa. I am loving her insights. Venete has gone through significant change over the last few years. Her realisation that her season of employment in the corporate sector was over, released an opportunity to start fresh with new opportunities. She reflected some valuable questions that we could be asking: What will I be remembered for? What do I hold in my hand? She feels that your primary impact will be seen in the lives of the people you have impacted. It is not about your title, qualification - but who are you in essence? For Venete - She is a woman of the soil, who loves South African's - specifically women but in general all South African's. Key to her presentaiton was the issue of care. What are you doing? How many women have you promoted? The care that we show people, will open the door for us to speak strategically and consistently into people's lives. How many women make work of studying the policies of companies to ensure that the policy has been designed for your benefits. What can we do to adjust the policies? How can we make our voices heard? Do you take advantage of the position you hold to use it to the advantage of others? Do you love what you do? If you don't love what you do, get out of there. Life is too short. We hold ourselves hostage to the responsibilities that we have taken on. Find the thing that drives you and amazing success becomes. Am I investing in the right people? In leadership roles, you do not have to spend equal time with everyone. You need to spend time with those who will be greater than you. As a leadeer, even as a mother - we need to invest our time appropriately into the right areas that will yield the best results. Are you working in your strengths? Why do we spend so much time looking at the areas that we are weak in, rather spend time celebrating your successes and growing your talents. When it comes to negative experiences or failures - can you leverage off these things - transform them into a challenge and ensure that you grow from the experience rather than letting you flounder. In closing, a) Do you generally care for people? b) Are you taking care of yourself? c) Will you do what you love?
