Trendy or Original?

Have you ever walked into a hair salon with a picture that you’ve cut out of a magazine, wanting the stylist to give you the look that some young, twenty-something starlet is wearing – it’s the hottest thing going at the moment.

This is the power that fashion trends have over us. They threaten to turn us all into cardboard cut-outs. Groups of teenagers prowl the malls looking like computer generated duplicates from “The Matrix” and even celebrities make the fashion faux-pas of wearing the same dress to the same or different events, as confirmed in the latest edition of Heat Magazine.

But is it possible to look trendy and original at the same time? A certain style is trendy when it catches on with the masses and everyone rushes out to try and look like… well, everyone else. But before anyone thought that that look was hot, it was one of the hundreds of looks the fashion industry pitches to us each season.

Designers put their creativity on display for everyone to see and to decide whose work they like the most. The winner walks away with the trend-setter of the year award, thus allowing them to reap huge rewards in retail sales as everyone rushes out to buy a piece of the designer’s creativity in the form of clothing. So, can you look trendy and original at the same time? The answer is, of course, you can.

Whether its clothing or hair, trends happen. So what happens when you walk into your salon and ask your stylist to make you look like the picture you hold clutched in your hand? Well, if they’re professional, he/she will consult with you and compare your hair texture with that of the model in the picture as well as both of your facial shapes.

Things like hair density will also come into the equation when deciding if that look will suit you. Trendy cuts and styles are fine for some women but not for all. So what do you do if you really like the look but it’s not realistic for you? I always advise my clients to take certain elements of different cuts or styles that they like to be combined in creating something that is uniquely them, but also contains some aspects of the current trends.

I know everyone envisions themselves as supermodels at some time in their lives and more often than not it’s when you’re standing in front of your stylist asking him/her to make you look like Giselle Bundchen. Sorry ladies, there just ain’t enough magic in them fingers. Consulting with your stylist will allow you to make informed choices. It’s good to have an idea of what you want, but you have to manage your own expectations as well. Be open-minded.

Allow your stylist some creative licence but let him/her know the limitations as well. Then, go get in touch with your inner supermodel! I don’t think you’ll need therapy for that.
