Many of us are addicted to the "news", be it in print, radio or visual form. But who decides what is newsworthy, and what motives lie behind this? Robin Wheeler suggests a different paradigm.

A lot can be said about the news, but from a spiritual point of view, hardly any of it is positive. It needn’t be that way, but it is for now.

The news functions on a particular plane of energy and perpetuates violent slumber. It focuses on events, not on consciousness; on negativity, not neutrality. It is dramatic, not detached. Yet it is presented in a detached way, which is partly why it is insane.

News presents itself as factual but it is far from it. It is sensationalism wrapped up as seriousness. It sells newspapers, keeps eyes glued to screens, gets people talking and spreads fear. Cleverly, it does so relentlessly in the name of social responsibility, which squeezes out awareness and intelligence and is highly irresponsible.

The news does not understand consciousness. It could not report on it. It understands unconsciousness and keeps reporting on it as if it is the whole truth. It is dumbing down the world and keeping the population drowned in anxious oblivion. This keeps the agents of social manipulation in power but does not serve the wellness of the individual or the group.

The news is about ego, about individual and collective false selves fighting over false power. It promotes self-perpetuating politicians and celebrates criminals, who are two sides of the same problem. It proudly sponsors the worst aspects of humanity, not to shock us awake but to keep us asleep. At best, it is a complete waste of resources.

If you are in any way inclined towards presence, which sooner or later you will be, the news will begin to seem pointless and then counter-productive. It will fall from your field of interest. You will gently let it go.

You will not read newspapers, listen to radio bulletins or watch television. Doing so addictively will slowly move from being normal to feeling unpleasant, to revealing its compulsiveness, to being indicative of a consciousness you no longer support in yourself and others.

Soon, engaging with the news will feel like dipping your head into a bucket of nuclear waste.

The real news is who we are when we let go of the negative.
