As working women we take on endless roles in our lives, and it can be hard to find, and keep, our balance. Being grateful for the things we have can put us back on that path.

As working women we take on endless roles in our lives. We hold down jobs, run households, bear and raise children, care for pets, support our partners, offer a shoulder to cry on, and somehow still find time for our friends.

All of this can seem overwhelming, and finding balance amidst all of the demands on our time can be quite a challenge, especially when we feel we are there for everyone else and there is nobody to help us.

The simple things are the ones we forget
Something that we tend to forget in the hustle and bustle of modern life, something so simple which often falls by the wayside, is gratitude. In the words of The Secret author, Rhonda Byrne, “gratitude can transform your life”, and being grateful for the things that we have is the first step towards finding that balance within ourselves.

Finding gratitude when your partner is snapping at you after a long day, when your boss seems unappreciative of the work that you do, when your children are misbehaving, when your dog has dug up your newly planted seedlings, seems to be an impossible task. But if we really sit down and think about it, we have much to be grateful for in our lives.

Find time to sit and think about it
As busy as our lives are, it is important to find time to sit quietly by ourselves and think about what we have to be grateful for. In the beginning, especially when you are angry or upset, it can be difficult, but start small, with something as basic as “I am grateful to have a job”. Even if you do not enjoy your job or get along with your boss or colleagues, having a job in a country with such a high rate of unemployment is something we can all be grateful for.

The more you tell yourself the things you have gratitude for, the easier it becomes to find what it is that makes your life worth living. The love of our families and friends, our personal talents and skills, gardening, the sunrise, reading a good book, or a hot bath, these are all things to be grateful for, and sometimes we need to vocalise these thoughts in order for us to truly appreciate how special they are and how much they add to our lives.

A little gratitude can go a long way
The best thing about gratitude is that the more we give, the more we receive. The more we focus on what makes us grateful, the less we criticise, complain and blame others, the less we rush, the less tense we become.

And the more we show others through our actions that we appreciate them, the more they show their appreciation for us in return. Balance is all about living life in a way that makes us happy and fulfilled, and finding gratitude is the first step towards achieving that life.
