"Bore-out" is the new "burn-out" - corporate SA take heed

Human Resource managers now have a fresh concern in a disturbing new trend affecting output and productivity. The traditional problem of ‘burn-out’ has made way for ‘bore-out’, which describes a scenario in which an employee’s zest for work is extinguished by the mundane rather than an unmanageable workload.

‘Bore-out’ is colloquialism that has found a footing within industry and is a reference to what occurs when employees lose impetus at work, feel frustrated and ineffective due to boredom and a lack of inspiration.
 
Executive management at Accsys, a national supplier of payroll, HR, Time & Attendance and Access Control solutions and home to Accsys PeoplePlace, a recruitment division, say local businesses should take the issue seriously.
 
“At a time when human resource development has emerged as a core focus and markets of all sizes require skills input to strengthen their labour force, the issue of employees’ well-being continues to underpin strategy. The problem of so-called ‘bore-out’ is often the result of little or no interaction between management and employees, oversight by a company in terms of job specification, goals and objective and targets. It also occurs when management fails to recognise distinction and achievement,” says Teryl Schroenn, CEO at Accsys.
 
The issue is not simply a matter of employee well-being, it reiterates the relevance and increasing significance of training, skills development, upskilling, empowerment, growth opportunity and career support adds Schroenn.
 
“As with any partnership, the degree to which an individual invests in a business to establish and further his or her career should be matched by employer investment in the development of employees. This issue is a real concern and is causing waves within an already turbulent skills pool,” Schroenn continues.

“There is a reason why people feel bored with their jobs. It is not always simply because people have to deal with what is comfortable and expected as part of their duties, it is also due to neglect and dereliction of what managers should do and look after,” Schroenn adds.
