Layoffs and retrenchments are common business practice in today’s business environment. Regularly laying off staff provides a firm with the flexibility to adjust quickly to changes in the market. It also allows firms to attack competition through lower prices, and this can be an advantage in producing cheap commodity items and in restructuring an enterprise quickly. However, in sectors where innovation and quality are important, a hire-and-fire approach brings disadvantages.
