Our Cape-based restaurant critic, Eleanor Barlow, unwinds at Hillcrest Wine Estate, a tranquil spot in the Cape winelands with a superb restaurant.

The venue

Hillcrest wine estate is nested in the Tygerberg Hills (Durbanville ward) and therefore boasts stunning views of the surrounding mountains, Atlantic ocean and Table Mountain.

In 1984 Hillcrest Estate was purchased by Haw & Inglis, a Cape-based construction company, as head office and workshop.  Later, the potential for the cultivation of quality wine and olives was realised. The owners planted Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The restaurant started as a small farm kitchen and has now matured into a busy restaurant.

 The vibe

The restaurant and its food have a Tuscan/Mediterranean feel with a South African twist. The breathtaking view and comfy vibe will melt away any city stress that you may have. Take a walk or go fishing at the quarry after breakfast, or join them at one of many events.

The menu

The menu caters for everyone, from the health conscious to the big eaters, and the kiddies meal is a feast for any toddler.

Start your day with a “Healthy Continental Breakfast” with layers of fresh fruit, Bulgarian yoghurt, muesli with honey and a muffin, or a “Cape Style Breakfast” with mushroom sauce, bacon and creamy scrambled egg on toast with steak and potato rosti.
On the confectionary menu they serve a selection of muffins, scones, sweet pancakes and cakes, to name a few.

For mains they recommend “Dalene’s Chicken Pie”, the “Chef’s Burger” or “Cut of the day”, matured for up to three weeks, rubbed with coarse black pepper, sea salt and topped off with their own Hillcrest olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

They also serve starters and platters for those with a small appetite.
Hillcrest boasts an exclusive collection of boutique wines and award-winning olive products which they use in the kitchen that you can enjoy with your food or buy and take home with you.
