Here are 10 easy tips on how you and your household can live greener by decreasing your carbon footprint. The nice added benefit is that going green could save you money. Check out these easy to implement ideas.
1. Insulate your geyser and set the temperature at 55 degrees Celsius. Insulating your geyser will save you money by reducing heat loss and setting the temperature to 55 degrees is sufficient to give you a hot shower, without wasting electricity to get it up to 100 degrees which is too hot to use. 2. Install a water-saving showerhead – This will save you water and give you a more pleasant shower experience. 3. Replace all conventional light-bulbs with energy saving light-bulbs. This is a quick and easy way to save electricity and money as energy savers last 10 times longer than ordinary light-bulbs. 4. Plant indigenous plans in your garden. They require less water to grow and will attract indigenous birds and insects into your garden. They will also thrive and grow better in their natural environment than exotic plants. 5. Be informed about your environment – Know what kinds of birds and insects live in your garden and area. What you know about your will care about, and learning about them – especially with your young children is lots of fun too. 6. Support your local park – the more children play there and adults walk there, the safer it will become. 7. Plant a vegetable garden – instead of buying veggies that have been packaged and transported hundreds of kilometres. They are not only tastier and more nutritious, growing your own will also save you money and do your bit for the environment. 8. Eat the meat of free-range animals only. In this way you are showing support to farmers that use sustainable humane breeding processes and avoid the health risks associated with consuming meat grown in an unsustainable way. 9. Equip an office in your home. These days more and more employers are open to employees working more flexibly and remotely out of the office. Approach your employer about this option which will save you petrol and reduce your carbon footprint. 10. Insulate your home – so it stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter. South Africans should not need to use air-conditioning but should rather just open a window for ventilation. |
