20 million questionnaires have been printed out and distributed to the 9 provinces. Each questionnaire comprises 75 questions - 50 about the individuals in each dwelling and 25 about the household. It is very important that you participate in the census.
The census plays an important role in public administration for example, ensuring government services reaches everyone; planning the location of a school or clinic; distributing government funds among various regions and districts for health and education services. It also provides a benchmark for future surveys, and well as research and analysis. The private sector also uses census information for activities such as business planning and market analysis. From 4 October 2011, Stats SA will embark on a "Know your Enumerator" campaign. During this campaign, street poles across the country will display a total of 2.8 million posters bearing the photos and contact details of people doing the counting. During the census, enumerators will have yellow bibs, bags, caps and folders; will carry letters signed by Pali Lehohla, the Statistician-General; and will carry special identity cards with photos and identification numbers. If you are in doubt of the legitimacy of the enumerator, you can call 0800 110 248 in order to verify them. How to determine if your enumerator is Legitimate: • Ask the person for his/her official census badge, and, if necessary, follow up with the call centre to verify employment (0800 110 248); • Either have the enumerator administer the questionnaire, or leave the questionnaire to self-complete, and arrange a date for collection; • Answer all questions accurately (your information will be kept confidential); • There will be one questionnaire per household, so be prepared to answer all questions on your household; • A barcode sticker will be left behind upon completion of the questionnaire to verify your house as counted. Note: You are not obliged to grant your enumerator access to your home, but you are obliged, under the Statistics Act, to provide your household information. This can be done by completing the questionnaire yourself, or giving your information to your enumerator in your yard, over your gate or through your fence.
